In his seminal paper, Claude Shannon expressly articulated that the fundamental problem of communication is that of reproducing at one point either exactly or approximately a message selected at another point. Most of the contemporary communication systems aim to solve the technical problem of maximizing the amount of bits transmitted per unit time. However, it is only recently that the research community has started exploring the semantic problem, inquiring how to convey the important information contained in the data.
This project will investigate and design mechanisms to realize semantic communications in Earth observation applications, covering traditional image compression and machine learning and AI mechanisms for feature extraction from images captures by non-geostationary orbit (NGSO) satellites.
The goal is to maximize the efficiency of the system by greatly reducing the number of transmitted bits while still delivering the important information contained in the images.
SatNEx V is a network of satellite experts dealing with the scenario of data processing and communication in a hybrid infrastructure of GEO and LEO satellites.
SatNEx V is a European Space Agency project within the framework Technology Development Programme. The project involves a range of university partners from all across Europe, including Aalborg University.
