More than 20 years with space at AAU
Back in February 1999, Denmark's first satellite, the Ørsted Satellite, was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The satellite was developed in collaboration between a large number of Danish research institutions and industrial companies - including Aalborg University.
The Ørsted Satellite was not only the start of something big for the space area in Denmark, but also for space research and education at Aalborg University, where the students in particular became interested in satellites at the beginning of the 00s. Soon after, AAU Student Space emerged, where students at the Department of Electronic Systems have since developed and launched 5 student-built CubeSats during the last +20 years.
THE GRASS ROOTS IN THE DANISH SPACE INDUSTRY
For many years, Aalborg has played an important role in the very foundation of the entire Danish space industry. Today, many of the companies within the industry have their head offices in Northern Jutland - and several of them with a connection to Aalborg University, either in the form of former researchers or students from AAU Student Space.
The space area at Aalborg University has been developing rapidly over the past 20 years, and especially in recent years there has been an increasing interest in the many possibilities it holds.
In 2021, AAU Space was therefore launched with a mission to focus on the historical, current and future space activities, which either have a connection to or take place at Aalborg University.
The focus is on developing research, education, and dissemination of knowledge within the area by putting interdisciplinarity first.
